Instagram Reel Cover Photo — Size, Tips & Frame Export
Reels cover photos appear on your profile grid at 9:16. Here is how to choose a strong cover frame and export it from your video without quality loss.
Instagram Reels cover photos determine how your profile grid looks — they are your visual storefront.
Display sizes
Reels upload at 1080×1920 (9:16). The profile grid shows a cropped preview, but users see full vertical when opening the Reel. Design for center-weighted composition.
Choosing a cover frame
Unlike YouTube, Reels covers often work best as clean, minimal frames:
- Product centered on plain background
- Face with neutral expression (not mid-speech)
- Title-safe area in the middle third
Skip frames with jump cuts, swipe transitions, or heavy motion blur.
Export workflow
1. Finish your Reel export as MP4 2. Open FrameSnap and upload the file 3. Use Quick picks to compare 6 moments 4. Export at Original size (preserves 9:16) 5. In Instagram → Reel → Edit cover → upload your image
PNG or JPG?
JPG at 90% is usually enough for photo-style covers. PNG if your frame has text or UI you need crisp.
Common mistake
Using a random auto-selected frame from Instagram’s picker. Those often land on the first frame (black screen, logo splash, or camera adjust). Always pick intentionally — or upload a custom export.
Extract your cover with FrameSnap before publishing.
